      8.  Adriaan van der Sande, born 24 Jun 1868 in Tholen, Zeeland; died Dec 1951 in Manitowoc Rapids, Wisconsin.  He was the son of 16. Johannes van der Sande and 17. Willemina Vermaas.  He married 9. Neeltje Jansen 11 Jun 1891 in Tholen, Zeeland.

      9.  Neeltje Jansen, born 19 Oct 1868 in Hoedekenskerke, Zeeland; died Jun 1948 in Branch, Wisconsin.  She was the daughter of 18. Levinus Jansen and 19. Margaretha Dorrepaal

Notes for Adriaan van der Sande:

Naturalization papers show name as Edward D. (Name "adopted" by Adriaan), birth extract shows as Adriaan.

Originally immigrated to Fond Du Lac County, Wisconsin about 1891-1893.

Arrived unknown ship via Ellis Island. Per Roger, Neeltje said the ship got stuck in harbor and were taken to Ellis Island on a different boat/ferry.  see train trip story in scrapbook, trip was to Fon Du Lac according to story.

John Dees helped Adrian and Nellie settle  near Adell (Hingham) approximate. 1894 or so.

John's wife Francina (Lucy) Jansen was Nellie's half-sister who married Jan (John) Dees and immigrated earlier..

Was in Dutch Calvary,

Families that arrived in US at same time (same ship???):  Born's and Schaap per Alden VS

Adriaan and Nellie lived for a time on a farm 1/2 mile from where Indians wintered in Fon Du Lac Co.  Had to sleep in barn to protect chickens, livestock, etc.  per Alden VS

Moved to "Bonhoff" farm near Adell..  Place where Andrew showed where house key was. per Alden & David VS

Moved off of Hwy 67 in Fon Du Lac Co., "Bille Rose" owned farm and burnt barn for insurance money, per Alden VS

Next farm was "Beck" farm, per Alden VS

Accomplished Farmer, bought "binder" (Baler) and did other farmers property for cash.

Worked as a Herdsman in Sheboygan Falls, last job, left personal belongings with that farmer, location unknown per Alden VS .

 Nellie was pregnant when she arrived.  Child is supposed to have lived only a few hours/days.  Adriaan wanted to go home after this happened. Alden says that child is buried in Fond Du Lac, that Margaret knew where. David thought child was named Wilhemina.

Notes for Augustus M. Cain:

Augustus disappeared when John B was in his early teens.  He went to town with a pocket full of money and was never heard from again.  Family lore says everything from robbers to itchy feet.  I have not been able to find any trace of him post 1905. 

Notes for Nellie J. Durkee:

Parents born in Vermont according to census records.  I believe that Nellie is not her true given Christian name.  Only time will tell what it really is.  In earlier census listings, her age is incorrect.  The 1900 Adams Co, WI Census shows her 10 years younger than Augustus, which I believe to be correct.  Also listed is length of marriage as 23 years in 1900, hence the estimated marriage year.

"The Oconto Post Office was located on the first floor of the Elks' Lodge building. George R. Hall was postmaster; Arthur W. Davis was assistant postmaster; Garrard Hall, Rudolph Schultz and Eleanor Lee were postal clerks.  Peter Heller, Ray Klass, Charles Vogel, George Perdzock and Louis Tennesen were city mail carriers,  Lucius Clark,   Guy Williams, Joseph Neuville, Herman Rosenfeldt, Tim Couillard and Henry Mehlberg had charge of the rural routes." 

Birth location variations abound.  Correct date on all versions, Neosho, Janesville, Rubicon are all listed in additional sources, which are within miles of each other.  Until I find his birth certificate, which one is correct is unknown.  1910 US Census shows them owning their home with no mortgage.
