for Henry Edward Thede: According to Laura Keller, daughter of Laura Emelie Thede, Henry Thede
drank a lot. He was a farmer, but
never owned any land. He rented
sections of land and raised wheat in North Dakota. There were no trees in North Dakota, so the farmers planted trees by
their homes for windbreaks. During
snow storms the wind would howl through the trees, making it sound like an
approaching train. During the
storms people would put lights in their windows so that in case a traveler came
along he could find his way to their home to spend the night. More

25. Lucy S. Farnham, born 14 Jul 1822 in Castine, Hancock
County, Maine; died Abt. 1858 in Ogdensburg, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. Notes
for William F. Cain: Have copies of 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census from Ogdensburg, Waupaca,
Wisconsin for William F. Cain Family. In the 1860 Census, small errors are there. First, the surname is listed as "Kane" and Augustus
is listed as a female! Where in the
1870 Census as a male. Children specifically listed in the 1860 Census are: William A, James A,
George A, Augusta M, Anna J, and Mary P. Second,
the adjourning farm is listed as unoccupied, see the notes for Mary Cain next,
specifically her residence in 1870.. In the 1860 Census there is listed a Mary Cain age 63 in Williams
household, but not identified as to relationship. She is listed in the 1870 Census, age 73, as living on the
next farm, with no one else listed as residents.
And finally in the 1880 Census, she is listed in James A Cain's household
as mother, at age 83. I have since found Mary's death registration, showing
additional information to show her as Williams mother. Based on Ruth Zwetz's notes and Williams obit, which states in 1897
"that his wife died 39 years prior", we can somewhat accurately place
Lucy's death about 1858. But here
comes the clunker, children are being shown in latter census's as recently being
born, AFTER Lucy's estimated death date. Specifically,
Willis F., age 8 in the 1870 Census, Prudelia age 14 in the 1870 Census.
First guess would be that their first names were listed incorrectly. Or they are cousins, etc. living in the household.
See notes below for Saloma Cain. Because of the number of women named Mary, some of them might have
changed their given names. I have
several other Mary Cains not attached that are in the individual treemap.
I have recorded them and hopefully I can tie them in. The 1870 Census. On this
sheet is listed a "Saloma", age 22 White Female. Occupation is listed as "Keeping house"
Now comes the second surprise, on William's daughter Lucy's marriage
registration I found, dated 16 June 1885, mother of wife before marriage is
listed as: Saloma Cain! She is also listed as a witness.
Until I can verify this with a secondary piece of documentation I am not
attaching Saloma as a second spouse. She
may be a relative ( related to Willis and Prudelia) who is helping to raise the
children or other speculation. The children listed in the 1870 census are: James A, Augustus M, Anna J,
Prudelia (spelling?) age 14, Willis F, and Lucy. Williams farm land was valued at $1000 and his personal estate at $2000. William does not appear in any further Census that I can find.
His Obit shows the same home from 1855 to 1897, so why he is not listed
later on is unknown. James and Augustus appear as head of households on the same
land in subsequent US Census's. William
F. Cain Obit. Waupaca Newpaper
dated Thursday, March 18, 1897: “William Cain, one of the oldest residents of Waupaca county, passed away at his home in the town of St. Lawrence, east of Ogdensburg on Monday night, March 15, aged about 80 years. He was a native of Maine, coming west in 1854, and settling upon the farm where he has lived ever since. His was the second house built on the road between Ogdensburg and Royalton. He leaves four sons to mourn his demise, his wife having died thirty-nine years ago. They are W.H. and Frank(1) of Rhinelander and James and A.M. of Ogdensburg.
The funeral was held at the house at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs. Moore conducting the services, and a large number of friends being
present. The interment was at the
Union Cemetery, St. Lawrence.” (1) I believe Willis F Cain, started using the first name of Frank. Extract
from the "Commerative Biographical Record of Upper Wisconsin", J.
H. Beers, published 1895, page 140. This
extract is from the chapter containing the biography of Henry A. Rich of
Bucksport, Hancock County, Maine. "The
only inhabitants in that town when Mr. and Mrs. Rich arrived (*fall of 1855)
were: Judge Ogden and Dreutzer,
Simeon Hopkins, Marshall Levitt, William Shambeau, Henry W. Eldredge, Smith L
Wait, WILLIAM CAIN, Hiram Collier, Smith Collier, Henry Carrick, Levi Carrick
and Peter Sheperd." Interesting coincidence, in the Township to the North of St. Lawrence [Helvetia, formed in 1861] three CAINS, Flan, Michael, and Bartley filed Land Patents in 1858. I know of no connection to these particular Cains. List it for future reference and research. William's headstone is missing, but from the Guyant Collection in Waupaca
Co. Library, it read: "CAIN - US War Veteran" More

James Cain, Born April 7, 1846 in Orville, Maine. The son of William F and Lucy S. Cain. Nationality-Irish family ancestors had come from Belfast,
Ireland to anti-Irish community. Later
founded Belfast, Maine. Moved to
Wisconsin in 1854 and settled on a farm, Town of St. Lawrence, Waupaca County,
Wisconsin about two miles from Ogdensburg.(1)
School - went to a private home. Taught
by a neighbor lady. She had no
teachers certificate. Next year
United District built school house.(2) First
teacher was Elsie Clark who received $2 a week and "boarded round"
with the families. Second year his
mother died leaving six children. (3) He
stayed on the farm until he was 20 years old. (4)
He worked in Wisconsin Pinery until he was 30 years old.
Married 9 April 1876 to Mary Elizabeth Durkee (5) of Schofield, WI.
The minister was Jessie Cole, Methodist. Their first home adjoined the Homestead in St. Lawrence.
They left there in 1898 and first settled in Hancock, Waushara County,
WI. After a year, moved to Town of
Leola, Adams County, WI., where he spent the rest of his life.
He was a Justice of The Peace from 1902 to 1912-14.
He joined the Congregational Church in 1909.
He had nine children. Recollections-usual
hard times. Many playmates were
Indians. They were nice playmates.
After they got acquainted, older Indians were friendly too.
The children played with bow and arrows and the same games as all
children. In 1862 there was some
excitement when some Indians got some whiskey." Comments: (1) I have found the
location on the St. Lawrence 1899 Plat Map.
It includes the Schoolhouse and 133 acres to the north of the road belong
to Augustus M. Cain, with James having 80 acres immediately to the east of
Augustus. (2) This should be the
"Old Block School House". It
is located about a mile and a half southeast from the Post Office.
I found an old list of cemeteries in the Waupaca Courthouse.
In it is listed the "Block/Cain" cemetery, next to the
"Old Block School House". I
went and found its location and stood in the cemetery.
Unfortunately, most of the headstones have been vandalized or worn
smooth. The school house is being
refurbished by someone. The 1899
Plot map for St. Lawrence Township refers to the cemetery as the "Union
Cemetery". (3) Places time of death for
Lucy as 1856. (4) I take this to mean he
moved away for 10 years until he got married. (5) The Durkee connection.
John Byron Cain's mother should be Nellie Durkee based on other birth
certificates I have found in Waupaca Co. Courthouse.
John, on his Social Security Application, dated 1940, states his father
as Augustus Cain and Nellie Bruel. I
believe that Nellie remarried after Augustus disappeared.
I have found a birth certificate (#87)
listing an un-named white female born to Augustus Cain (born in Maine)
and Nellie Durkee (born in Vermont) 12 Oct 1894.
On this entry into the ledger is listed "other living issue".
George, Earl, JOHN, Lewis, Minnie, Adalie (?spelling) and Roy.
Proven so many times over of marriages of brothers/sisters into another
family, I suspect that Nellie Durkee might be related to Mary E. Durkee.
The Society of Genealogy of Durkees, at this time can not tie Nellie into
their database, but Mary E. is. Previous
to my contacting them, they were missing some data on this family. More
