      57.  Mary Newlove, born 13 Feb 1808 in Yorkshire, England; died 30 Aug 1863 in Neosho, Dodge Co., WI.

Notes for Henry Scott Clark:

In the US Federal Census of 1860 Henry lists his personal estate at $100.  The only child showing in the household at this time is Sarah.

He does not show any land ownership, which is why I suspect he is living on either George Browns land or Erwin Watermans.  Nor is an occupation listed for him.

Interesting note is who is living next door at this time:

His two immediate neighbors are George Brown, age 32, born in England.  Married to Atlanta age 26, born in NY, with daughter Mary A., age 8.  I really believet this is Atlanta Clark, daughter of Henry Scott.  Her age and birthplace are perfect and Erwin Waterman who lives on the other side of Henry, his wife Lucy Sophronia is a Brown.  Making the connection more likely.   As I can prove time and time again, people marry who they know and live close to during this age.  George is a distant cousin of Lucy Sophonia I am sure.  He lists his birthplace as England, where her family has been around in New England for a couple of generations.  Over and over I can prove family members coming to America to join other relatives.

Two Waterman children marry Henry Scott Clark's children, Roland to Sarah and Marion Josephine to Henry S.

In the 1850 Census for Rubicon, page 50, Dodge Co., WI appear three other Clark families.  I list them here for reference because I believe there probably is a tie to them:

William Clark:, age 40, laborer, born in England, spouse is Phebe, age 44

Children: Henny age 4, Adolph age 2

On the very next page (51) appear two other Clark families:

Ossiau (sp?) Clark, age 57, physician (and what looks like "veternarian" !), born in NY.  Spouse Nancy age 28, also born in NY

Children: Hanette (sp?) age 23, Julia age 17, and Madina age 16.  Hanette born in NY, latter two in WI.

Next house over is listed Oscar W. Clark, age 30, Farmer, born also in NY.  Spouse is "Anna", (handwritting is poor, last entry on page) age 20, born in Canada

iii.        William E. Clark, born Abt. 1838 in Seneca Lake, Seneca Co., New York; died 02 Nov 1864 in Andersonville Confederate Prison,(Camp Sumter), GA.

Notes for William E. Clark:

Grand Army of the Republic:

Compulation from service, enlistment, and Andersonville Confederate Prison records.

Vital statistics:

age 24, Blue eyes, Brown hair, Light complexion.  5' 8", occupation as Farmer prior to enlistment. Private at enlistment

William was recruited by Lt. Kohlsport in Fond Du Lac, WI at the same time with his brother Henry S.  William was wounded at The Battle of Chaplin Hills, KY 8 Oct 1862.  Records show he was transfered with Henry to Louisville Nov 1862 for hospitalization.  There is a note he was wounded in the thigh at Perryville also.  Leave of Absence in Sep 1863.  This must have been for a very short time.  He was captured by Confederate Forces on 20 Sep 1863 at The Battle of Chickamauga, GA 19-20 Sep 1863.  He was listed MIA until the GAR recieved notification via Prisoner List #3.  He died as a Confederate Prisoner, Andersonville, GA  Andersonville National Park reference #11744, gravesite.

Scorbutis is listed as cause of death.  I researched it and found "Scurvy".  I found some medical research papers stating that scurvy is from the lack of Vitamin C.  A biochemestry research paper stated that "numerous investigations have demonstrated that in vitamin C deficiency the principal failure of wound healing was impaired synthesis and secretion of collagen (Robertson and Schwartz, 1953)."

In plain english, William died from the lack of Vitamin C and his wounds not healing properly.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Erwin shows his estate at $820 and land worth $1500.  His two oldest sons do not appear in this census in the household.  Charles does not show either for some reason.  His nieghbors are Henry Scott Clark at this time.

      60.  Joseph Cardinal, born in Montreal, Can.; died Unknown.  He married 61. Josephine Descornia.

      61.  Josephine Descornia, died Unknown.

Notes for Joseph Cardinal:

Family Lore (attributed to Darlene Vivian Cain Schroeder McFarland & Donna Jean Cain Keune):

Then the two men were working out in the woods one day and father Joseph said to young Joseph (Abt. 16 then) it's time to head home so we can clean up and get ready to go to confession. Young Joseph stated he did not want to go because he didn't want to confess his sins to a man any more, that sins should only be confessed to God. Father Joseph said I will disown you and you shall never shadow my doorway again if you don't go with me. Young Joseph disappeared. Eventually father Joseph and Josephine had another son whom they again named Joseph! After father Joseph died and Josephine was up in age she somehow found the wayward Joseph and asked him to come and see her before she died. He did. So then the oldest Joseph married Mary Ann Johnston and he worked in a brickyard.”

There are many additional leads, that tend to make this story believable.  Additional research is working on the other young Joseph.  Some census records show a younger Joseph in the household after the older Joseph left.

Child of Joseph Cardinal and Josephine Descornia is:

30            i.        Joseph * Cardinal, born Bet. 17 Oct 1828 - 1833 in Detroit, Wayne Co., MI; died 21 Aug 1913 in Oconto, Oconto Co., WI; married Mary Ann Johnston 01 Jul 1859 in Green Bay , WI.

      62.  Samuel S. Johnston, born Abt. 1809 in Belfast, Ireland; died 02 May 1886 in Green Bay, Brown Co, WI.  He married 63. Mary Ann Langrill 14 Dec 1837 in the Army Base, Fort Howard, Green Bay, Brown Co., WI.

      63.  Mary Ann Langrill, born 10 Apr 1810 in Belfast, Ireland; died 22 Jan 1890 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Notes for Samuel S. Johnston:

From daughter Mary's obituary [Document#167CLARK, Vol. 1];

Her father was a drill sergeant in the regular army, serving in the Mexican War and the Civil War.  He operated a brick yard in Green Bay and De Pere for many years.  Many of the old buildings standing today in Green Bay are buildings built from the brick made by him.

Served in the War of 1812 per Mary's obit.

The 1870 US Census shows several discrepancies:  Shows Samuel as age 52, where in the 1860 Census it showed him as age 51 more accurately.  He only aged 1 year in a decade!  Same thing with Mary Ann, She is shown as age 56, and the 1860 shows her as age 49 more accurately.  The Census enumerator must have had a really bad day!  Son William no longer appears in the household. Where he is I do not know at this time.  Listed are George 19, and Henry 17 accurately.  Sarah married the previous year and shows across town in the 3rd ward with her husband Joseph Cardinal for this Census period.   Samuel's Real Estate is valued at $600 per this census.  Both Samuel and Mary Ann show parents being of foreign birth on the Census.

One of the memorable discoveries I have made was for Samuel & Mary Ann.  I had been searching for their daughters marriage record to Joseph Cardinal.  It was at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay, Cofrin Library Special Research Center.   Here they have a huge repository of original records.  I found the original "permission to marry" certificate issued in 1837 by the Territory of Wisconsin on file.  It was fun to hold this 175 year old document.  Also on hand was the handwritten ledger by the County Clerk showing the marriage entry.

Notes for Mary Ann Langrill:

In the 1870 Census it shows Mary Ann being born in Canada, as does the 1860 Census.  I am not sure if this is the point of immigration, or the undocument birthplace of Ireland is in error.
